TYPES OF WOOD

What wood should I choose?

AMERICAN WALNUT

A wood difficult to describe. American Walnut is filled with colours of green and purples. It is often used in building beautiful rifle stocks and high-end furniture perfect for your modern 21st Century home.

KIAAT

A proudly southern African wood for people who like an arty wood. Depending on where it grows and the minerals that this wood is exposed to determines the vast colourations within the Kiaat wood family. With so many different colours, this is your go to wood if you are looking for something with more character and grain than your typical American hardwoods. There are two types of Kiaat, primarily the high-grade all-brown being more consistent in colour as well as brown and white which varies in its look.

TAMBOTI

The Tamboti is an honoured tree of Southern Africa and one of the most interesting trees out there because of its incredible properties. You cannot cook with Tamboti, but it is an ideal wood for any dining room table to share a meal with your loved ones. Tamboti is a very dark, red to brown heartwood coming from the inner most part of the tree or try a more live edge piece from the younger sap parts of the tree.

BIRDS EYE MAPLE

The Birds Eye Maple has a specific type of grain much like different grades of gold, tress work very much in the same way. This specific wood has a beautiful golden vibration to it, an almost silky finish ideal for almost any statement piece of furniture.

WHITE OAK

Oak is for the modern at heart. A great wood for people who enjoy a beautifully hard finish to their pieces, very straight monochrome and even colour. It is very even and constant in its colouration, call it upper end colouration if you will, it’s a rather expensive wood but worth every penny, a piece that will outlive us all. It truly speaks volumes in its simplicity.

Golden finish when it’s been oiled the right way.

TEAK

A carpenters dream. Historically, teak wood has been used on railway sleepers for many years. This extremely hard wood has a long lasting, deep contrasting colour, perfect for decking and multitude of different pieces of furniture. Its finishes are extremely smooth and leaves you with a deep Rooibos tea colour feel to it.

RED OAK

Lovely in the sense that it’s the same as white oak but has a pinkish, red vibe to it when finished off. Many people use it for the doors of wine cellars because of its beautiful rustic “reddy” vibe. It deliveries an old-aged appeal from the get-go allowing the way the colour pops to be different to any other oak wood.

FRENCH OAK

A beautifully consistent wood that is readily available. If you are looking for something similar to white oak in colour and finish but need something that is gentler on the pocket. French oak has a rustic feel and is perfect for your farmhouse kitchens.

ROSEWOOD

The name in itself is beautiful. Rosewood has a lot of oil and sap in it, which makes it burn very quickly when machining. Add to this the pungent smell of sweet roses, and your house More common Rosewood we get comes from Angola called the Angolan Rosewood.

An interesting story: I once worked with a piece of Angolan Rosewood and found a 7.62x39 AK47 bullet head lodged into the wood from what I believe might have been the Angolan war. A truly historical piece of timber!

IROKO

This is a monotone type of wood that has a very nice golden-brown feel to it, some would say it is green. Iroko has a modern clean cut so if you are looking for more of a bushy vibe, this is the wood for you. A popular, old wood, that is high in demand. Perfect for those lovers of coffee who might accidentally knock over their mug – no dents!

JACKELBERRY

If you love live edge pieces unique to your home and style, Jackelberry has a good look to it. A deeply, firey red colour with many beautiful imperfections and shadows that will make anyone who sees this piece completely in awe. A once in a lifetime must have piece.

Jackelberry is commonly found in disc shape, that shows off the timeless grain of the timber. They are often popular because of their deep curves and wild shapes along the edges of the wood.

WILD OLIVE

Did someone say gorgeous? Wild Olive is just that, absolutely gorgeous! You never know what you might get – your Forest Gump, box of chocolates kind of wood. With a lot of reds, blacks and browns, Olive Wood has a golden contrasting type of finish and a wide variety of different grains etched into it. If you are looking to add a little resin to your piece, Wild Olive is the perfect addition.
